🌿 Mount Pleasant agrees to buy 129 acres on Highway 41

🌿 Mount Pleasant agrees to buy 129 acres on Highway 41

The Gist: Mount Pleasant Town Council approved a settlement to buy 129 acres of the 185-acre Republic Tract for $28.5 million. The Highway 41 deal would preserve more than two miles of waterfront and limit private development to 95 homes, down from a proposal for 1,600 units.

Why It Matters: The agreement would protect a large stretch of marshland from development. The town says part of the property could become a public park.

What's Next: The deal has a 90-day due diligence period, with closing happening as soon as April 2027.

πŸ–₯️ Mount Pleasant halts large data center proposals for two years

The Gist: Mount Pleasant Town Council extended a proposed 120-day data center moratorium to two years. The pause covers facilities of at least one megawatt and stops the town from accepting or approving related applications and permits.

Why It Matters: Town officials want rules for where these facilities could go and how to address power use, water use, and noise before another proposal arrives.

What's Next: Town staff will study suitable sites and development conditions, then recommend changes to the zoning code and comprehensive plan.

πŸ–οΈ Folly Beach puts $50,000 rental study in motion

The Gist: Folly Beach is choosing a firm from four proposals to study its short-term rental rules. A judge invalidated the voter-approved 800-license cap in August. The $50,000 study will examine six options, including rentals of up to 72 days a year and license transfers between family members.

Why It Matters: The findings could shape the island's next rental ordinance, affecting property owners, year-round neighbors and businesses that rely on visitors.

What's Next: Results are expected by the end of 2026. The city's pause on new rental licenses runs through February.

πŸš’ Summers Corner gets a staffed fire and EMS station

The Gist: Dorchester County opened Fire Station 22 in Summers Corner, near the Ashley River. The new fire and EMS station is fully staffed and was funded through county fire and general funds.

Why It Matters: County officials hope the closer station will cut emergency response times in the area by about 10 to 15 minutes and improve access to nearby wooded areas.

🏠 Ronald McDonald House Charleston to add 34 bedrooms

The Gist: Ronald McDonald House Charleston is expanding its downtown facility from 32 bedrooms to 66. Ten of the current rooms are reserved for children receiving transplants and their families. The nonprofit's Expanding Hope campaign is helping fund the addition.

Why It Matters: More rooms will let families stay near their children during medical treatment instead of looking for a hotel or other place to sleep.
