🌧️ Sunday rain breaks 1893 record downtown

The Gist: Charleston recorded 3.64 inches of rain Sunday, Oct. 4, beating the day's 2.51-inch record from 1893. Downtown streets flooded, including roads near Ashley Avenue and Calhoun Street, and firefighters rescued at least nine stranded motorists.

Why It Matters: Knee-deep water near the Medical District can block routes to Charleston's hospitals.

πŸš— Charleston drafts tougher traffic reviews

The Gist: With 1,500 housing units approved between River Road and the Maybank Highway bridge, Charleston official said they are drafting an ordinance that requires developers to study traffic in surrounding roads.

Why It Matters: Johns Island residents have pressed the city about congestion as housing grows.

What's Next: The ordinance will go to City Council for public input and a vote; the city has not announced a date yet.

πŸ›οΈ CofC to release Coming Street ground scans

The Gist: The College of Charleston expects to release a redacted report this week on ground-penetrating radar scans at 106 Coming Street, where it proposes a 1,000-student dorm. The college scanned the site in February; it was once part of an 18th-century burial ground.

Why It Matters: The report could guide archaeological work on land where poor residents, enslaved people and orphaned children are believed to have been buried. Members of the college's Community Engagement Council have questioned how much of the findings they will be allowed to see.

What's Next: The college plans to release the redacted report this week and remove asphalt sometime after Oct. 25.

Why It Matters: The plan would bring 332 homes to an idle Upper Meeting Street property, while city planners weigh its effect on a nearby cemetery.

What's Next: The proposal goes to technical review next.
