At 2063 Middle Street on Sullivan's Island, The Obstinate Daughter serves coastal Southern cooking through a French, Italian and Spanish lens. The menu centers on wood-fired pizza, handmade pasta, small plates and raw-bar favorites.

🚒 Records Flag 146 Out-of-Service Hydrants
The Gist: A July 20 Charleston Water System list obtained by Live 5 showed 146 of its more than 11,000 hydrants damaged or otherwise out of service. The utility checks hydrants every three years and prioritizes a 24- to 48-hour repair when no working hydrant is within roughly 500 feet.
Why It Matters: Crews can adapt and use nearby hydrants, but a reliable first water source matters when firefighters arrive and seconds count.

📚 CCSD Sets 75.8% Reading Goal
The Gist: The Charleston County school board approved academic goals for 2027 through 2031, including a target of 75.8% of students reading at or above grade level by 2031. The roadmap also covers math, science, college and career readiness, and school climate.
Why It Matters: The benchmarks will shape school plans and evaluations for principals and teachers, with added attention to students facing poverty, disabilities or language barriers.
What's Next: The goals take effect in 2027 and will guide district work through 2031.

🏘️ $60M Robert Mills Manor Renovation Advances
The Gist: The Charleston Housing Authority plans a $60 million renovation of 87-year-old Robert Mills Manor, covering exterior work and repairs inside its 217 units. Charleston County is considering a 100% property tax reduction for 44 years to make the project financially viable.
Why It Matters: Keeping the complex in service would preserve 217 affordable homes as the county tries to add tens of thousands more units.
What's Next: The incentive needs three County Council approvals, with a final vote expected by the end of September.
